Oh, SO looking forward to some sun and serious beach time…..
Minimal packing as we were heading somewhere warm….
So, last Tuesday, VERY early in the morning, we headed to East Midlands airport, leaving the cold weather behind us (or so we thought!!)
We met some friends at the airport who had the same idea and were heading to Spain:
Hi Chris and Colin!
We boarded Ryan Air, and, after a 4 hour flight we landed here:
Arrecife International Airport on the island of Lanzarote, Canary Islands
Here is a close up map of the Islands:
Lanzarote is the most easterly and the fourth largest of the Canary Islands. It's only about 35 miles in length and 17 miles wide and is classified as having desert-type weather!!
The clouds at the airport were our first clue. The second clue was at our hotel:
Hmmmm …. no one at the pool!
Lanzarote was having a spell of very unseasonable weather. In fact all the guests were wearing fleece and down jackets and I even spotted these:
UGG boots!
However, being the eternal optimist:
We had a good time anyway!
The Hotel Corbeta is situated near Playa Blanca and was great:
We had our own bungalow with it's own patio:
The staff were great and really friendly as were all the Canarians.
I was fascinated by the size of the cacti:
Due to the aridity, irrigation hoses were evident everywhere.
This is a species of Euphorbia, I've kept one of these plants indoors for years but it never grew so big and bushy. It actually belongs to the same family as the poinsettia.
The island is famous for it's aloe products.
There were hedges of multi- coloured bougainvillea
and hibiscus …..
Rows of empty sun loungers along the Playa Blanca!
And also this guy. I wonder if he's the same one that erects the Inukshuks along Highway 11??
The rocks are all lava.
The food was great: goat kebabs and local fish!
And, once in a while, we got a bonus - a hint of a blue sky!!
Talk soon
Zoe
