Rome wasn't built in a day........

Or two or three for that matter!

From Stanstead Airport we were whisked away
to Rome Ciampino Airport all in the
space of 2 hours. I'm constantly amazed by how
quickly and efficiently air travel can whisk you
into a new country and to a new culture in the
blink of an eyelid!

A couple of minor glitches en route to our hotel - we
ended up going a roundabout route.........

via bus and Metro....

and ended up at Rome Termini Station, Rome's major
overland travel hub.....

One bus ride and a short walk later, we reached our
hotel.......

The next morning we set out to see the sights of Rome....

after a filling LCHF breakfast of course!!!

Our hotel was situated in a suburb of Rome, easily
accessible to Rome Termini by bus. We headed down the street....

caught the bus to Termini.......

and started our tour of Rome.....

I loved the terracotta stucco...

Wow!!! If I thought London is steeped in history, Rome is
maybe even more so...... after all, Julius Caesar led his army
across the sea to Britain in 55 BC!

The Piazza Venezia, one of the central thoroughfares in
Rome.....

The Colosseum.....

The Circus Maximus, site of chariot races in years
gone by. Remember the epic movie Ben Hur?

The skyline was dotted with many churches, cathedrals
and basilicas......

I couldn't resist this painting of my fellow country-man,
John Paul II

And, of course, the most famous church of them all......
St. Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Square.......

St. Peter's and the Vatican City to the right......
The Vatican City State is a walled enclave within the
city of Rome and is the smallest state in the world, both
by area and population.

As in London, every time one turned, another piece
of history was revealed.....

The River Tiber....

One of the many bridges across the river...

The famous Trevi Fountain and yes, I did throw a coin in to assure
a return visit to Rome!

The Spanish Steps, currently closed for a Bulgari- funded
restoration. Remember Gregory Peck and Audrey Hepburn in
Roman Holiday and the Spanish Steps?

And...... to give you a very small glimpse into the life
of this beautiful city.........

Lots of narrow little streets with impeccable parking........ a complete
contrast with Vietnam!

Outdoor cafes.........

Small piazzas dotted all over the place......

Loved the cobblestones - very easy to walk on and meticulously
laid by hand........

and very small trucks to manoeuvre the streets......

Orange trees lining both sides of main thoroughfares.......

Increased security following the massacres in Paris
last year....

and, I just couldn't resist this photo in the Vatican City.... a
whimsical touch......

Lots of street performers........

and a lovely couple dancing to Frank Sinatra's "I Did it My Way"..,.

His eyes never left her face...... a true romantic....aaaah.....

They deservedly got a round of applause from the
onlookers at the end of the dance.....

The lovely Olga from St.Petersburg and her artwork.....
We spoke in a mixture of Polish, Russian and English!
And, I couldn't resist the painting! I have lots of bare walls!

One of my favourite European stores - Zara......

And this lovely little store selling Italian leather gloves....

I fell in love with every single pair!

But no, I didn't even buy one pair!!! But they were lovely to
look at.....

And..... to top of a brilliant day - the best pizza I've ever tasted!
The thinnest crust, topped with fresh tomato, fresh buffalo mozzarella
and anchovies and washed down with a glass... or two.... of
Valpolicella..... mmmmm. We were so hungry at the end of the day
I forgot to take a photo until it was all finished!

Rome - the Eternal City - well named because ancient Romans
believed that no matter what happened to the world or how many
empires came and collapsed, Rome would go on forever.......

Loving it...... and living La Dolce Vita.......
